Your Detail & Design team: all the talent you need under one (virtual) roof.
Whatever market you are in, whatever service you are providing, we can help amplify your voice and get your message heard. Our design and communications strategies are a vehicle for delivering your story, not ours.
As a collection of business owners ourselves, we know Durham, and we know business. We’ve all been there: the branding, the marketing, the business development. We're well versed with how each marketing element supports the others, and we bring this experience to bear on our work at Detail & Design.
We will spend time getting to know you and your strengths, values, priorities, and areas for growth. We will then develop authentic messaging that communicates your story to your customers.
So go ahead and spend your time doing what you do best - and leave the communications to us.
You have the mission. You have the idea. We know how to communicate it.

Social Media Strategist & Web Designer

She has previously run social media campaigns for a home show in St. Louis, MO, The Vital Voice newspaper, and for her company Nido Durham, a coworking space with on-site childcare. She directs the overall marketing efforts at Nido, as well as coordinating events and long-term business development. Tiffany completed her bachelor’s degree at Washington University in St. Louis, where she studied comparative literature and psychology. She studied social entrepreneurship at the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship and completed a small business certificate at Mountain BizWorks in Asheville, NC. Mary Johnson Rockers
Hand Lettering & Illustration
Mary has always found writing with pencil and pen to be immensely gratifying, both in ritual and in form. Growing up and throughout college, her envelopes for letters to friends and family did not simply include a name and address but dramatic design elements and illustrated lettering intended to “wow” the recipient (and perhaps, admittedly, even the postman).
Years later, Mary was inspired by modern scribes and the growing trend towards hand-lettered design to return to her practice. Just after announcing her hand lettering and calligraphy services in 2014, her portfolio was quickly filled with a wide range of individual and business commissions. When not exploring the endless ways to write the cursive letter B, Mary works as a program manager at a public health organization. She is also an established performing singer-songwriter in the Triangle region. Mary lives in Durham with her husband, two young sons, and dog Harley.
Kate Van Dis
Creative Content Development
Before becoming a full-time writer, Kate Van Dis taught 10 years of high school English and Creative Writing, an experience that taught her all of the grammar she thought she learned in college. Kate’s clients represent a diverse range of industries – from educational nonprofits to building contractors and high-end salons. Her favorite part about copywriting is researching a new industry and writing about it like an expert. She holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Teaching from the University of North Carolina. She is also an award-winning fiction writer, a mother of two boys, an amateur designer of her own (unintentional) tiny home, and a boxer-in-training. Kate's writing skills and eclectic interests combine to create the fresh, creative voice you need for your website or blog.
Lis Tyroler, of Lis Tyroler Photography, truly loves to connect with her clients using her camera to creatively and honestly capture the essence of each individual, family, or business. With a background as a clinician, her inspiration comes from creative storytelling collaboration with her subjects. She has worked as a clinical autism researcher, clinical social worker with cancer patients, and currently co-owns Nido Durham Coworking + Childcare. As a Durham native and entrepreneur, she feels passionately about supporting Durham businesses. She spends her free time frolicking around Durham with her son and husband, and has a myriad of interests in all aspects of the arts, including fiber, brush, and food.
